Mara EllisonPhotographer working across place, objects, and portraiture

I photograph the quieter evidence of how a place is used: its first light, working surfaces, pauses, and repeated routes.

Selected collections

Five bodies of work, edited one frame at a time.

02 / Studio objects

Objects in Balance

A controlled studio study of ordinary tools, translucent surfaces, and the shadows that connect them.
Translucent vessel, small metal form, and folded fabric arranged under directional studio light
Still-life photography2026

Each arrangement uses three objects and one directional light. I sequenced the series by shifting weight and transparency, so the photographs read as a measured progression rather than unrelated product shots.

03 / After rain

Rain Ledger

Evening street observations organized around reflected light, temporary shelter, and the final hour of trade.
Stacked materials and fabric awnings reflected in a fictional wet evening street
Documentary photography2025

I kept the camera at walking height and used repeated awnings, puddles, and stacked materials to hold the sequence together. Distant figures provide scale without turning an identifiable person into the subject.

04 / Field notes

Open Ground

Low coastal paths, wind-shaped grass, and small structures recorded across changing weather.
Low coastal path through wind-shaped grass under blue dawn light
Landscape series2025

The horizon stays at a consistent height while distance and human scale change from frame to frame. The approach lets weather and land use carry the variation without turning the landscape into spectacle.

05 / Portrait study

Held Distance

A restrained portrait study using profile, fabric, and window light to explore distance without theatrical posing.
Seated profile portrait partly screened by translucent fabric in soft studio light
Portrait study2024

I worked at one respectful camera distance and changed only the sitter’s orientation and the position of a translucent screen. The resulting sequence is about posture and light rather than an invented biography.

Practice

The edit begins before the shutter.

Portrait of Mara Ellison in an understated documentary photography studio.

My projects begin with a narrow visual question and enough time to notice repetition. I work across architecture, still life, documentary, landscape, and portraiture, then edit each series around relationships rather than isolated favorite frames.

Captions stay concise and practical. They name the setting, the reason for the sequence, and what connects one photograph to the next.
